Robert Doak’s Concentrated Watercolors
It’s about time I upgraded the information concerning my watercolors, paper & related products for the people that know about them for the past 22 years and the new ones.
First, no company has anything remotely close to what I have developed.
Super- concentrated, Brilliant, Light Fast Liquid Water Colors!!!
The paper I designed for them is just as important. As watercolor painters know when you lay down a wash on all papers it looks great, nice and bright when it dries it’s dead, why? All other papers are sized with cheap animal hide glue, from dead horses, cow & goats and you can smell it when it is wet. PHEW!! That glue reactivates when you wet the paper and destroys the color in the paint. My paper is made with gelatin that comes from the sinews of a calf and is sterilized for purity. No smell, no color loss, better visual look. If you want to see how my paper looks, get a sheet of bounty towel and put my color on it.
As a watercolorist myself, I inherited my interest from my father who was a competent painter in the style of Turner, Constable & Homer. With his English background, he had it in his genes and passed it on to me. I developed into an Emil Nold’e devotee, therefore the resulting products. Tastes aside the principles remain the same. I recommend wiping the paper first with distilled water and starting wet in wet, it gives you more control and more brilliance. The colors are so strong and concentrated that it’s difficult to lay it down full strength on a dry surface and wash it out. The result has the depth of oil paint!
These colors can be made into waterproof inks, gouache or liquid acrylics, just by adding the right ingredients. You can prepare your paper or canvas with mica to give a mother of pearl effect. I have a solvent based, “liquid glass” that eliminates plexi or glass for protection.
I have a very informative technical booklet photo copy of the history of watercolors, well worth your time, I learned more from this than any other printed matter
